Wuskwatim Transmission Project

The generating station will require new transmission lines and substations to deliver electricity into Manitoba Hydro's existing transmission system.

Construction of the new transmission facilities is a separate project. The transmission project is the sole responsibility of Manitoba Hydro, is not part of the Project Development Agreement and is outside the jurisdiction of WPLP. Manitoba Hydro will maintain ownership of all the transmission project assets including the three new sections of transmission line and two new stations, as well as the upgrades to existing stations.

Ensuring Transmission Reliability

To ensure reliability and versatility of transmission, the new lines will be built south of Wuskwatim between Thompson to the east and The Pas to the West to connect with the existing power grid at three points:

  • New Birchtree Station in Thompson
  • Existing Herblet Lake Station
  • Rall’s Island Station in The Pas.

One 230-kilovolt (kV) transmission line will be required between Wuskwatim and Birchtree; two 230-kV lines between Wuskwatim and Herblet Lake; and one 230-kV line between Herblet Lake and Rall’s Island. The 230-kV line between Wuskwatim and Birchtree will be used initially for developing the generating station. (Click on map to enlarge.)

A new substation will be built at the Wuskwatim Generating Station to provide voltage transformation and switching. The substation will step-up the electricity from the generating station to 230 kV for transmission to the existing hydroelectric transmission system.
